National Year of Reading 2012

As you are probably aware from previous posts, 2012 is the National Year of Reading. On the 25th of August here at McCarthur Park PS, we participated in the Reading Hour. This was one of the many activities that we have held throughout the year to celebrate this fantastic initiative.

Comfortable bean bags, cushions and rugs were set up for children to spend an hour reading their favourite book, or magazine as well as teachers and libary staff reading stories to the younger children. The children will hopefully gain an appreciation of listening to and reading stories.

For parents who would like to know more about the National Year of Reading log on to the website http://www.love2read.org.au where you will find an enormous amount of information on how to encourage your child to read and to also inspire those keen readers to explore new inspirations. With competitions and information for all ages of reader including adults, it is well worth a look .

Book Week 2012

On Friday the 23rd of August the McCarther Park Primary School celebrated Book Week with the children dressing up as their favourite character from a book.

There was a wide variety of characters on parade including Dora the Explorer, Darth Vader, Bob the Builder and Pokemon characters.  It was great to see the teachers getting int the spirit of Book Week with Little Bo Peep (Mrs Guildford), Harry Potter (Mr White) and Bart Simpson (Mr Simpson) making an appearance, just to name a few. Prizes were awarded on the day to the best costumes, as judged by the library staff, but I think everyone was a winner with a large sum of money being raised for the Save the Children Charity from the gold coin donation each contestant gave.

The Book Fair that was run in conjunction with Book Week was also well supported and a big thankyou goes out to our coordinator Mrs Jones, for all her hard work in the running of the fair. All the commission raised from the Book Fair goes towards buying more resources for the library which can only be of benefit to all. So start thinking of  your constumes for next year and once again a big thankyou to everyone.

Look at all the books!

New Children's Reading Area

Checkout the new children's reading area in the library. Early in the year it was decided that we needed a new, modern reading area for the younger children. We have endeavoured to provide an area that will encourage the children to read and engage in activities within the library either during the lunch break or before and after school. This new area, as you can see from the photo, is a modern design which is both uplifting and functional. With the modular construction and bright colours we think this area will become a favourite with everyone.

So to celebrate the opening of this new area and to allow parents and friends to explore what the school library has to offer we are inviting everyone to our open day which is to be held on the 24th of October, during the holidays, starting at 10am. It will give everyone a chance to explore this new addition to the library and also to enjoy a morning tea with your family and friends from the school. Mark it on your calendar and come along. Please RSVP via email to mccarthurparkps@education.spv.net.au if you plan on attending.
